“Knowing” – Everybody Dies And The World Ends

The other week I had the rare opportunity to sit and watch a movie with my entire family. This includes The Elder Bishops. You see, if it were not for The Elder Bishops I might not be the loving-all-things-nerdy kinda cat that I am. I remember my dad was such a fan of “Space 1999” that he even had the model of the ship on that show. I always loved that ship. We would watch “Star Trek” and I would develop a deep respect of Spock and his Vulcan ways. I love Sci-Fi as much as I love the Horror, but it’s such a shame that a good Sci-Fi film comes along.

The Elder Bishops decided to purchase a copy of the Nicolas Cage film, “Knowing” and I’ll be honest, I always wanted to see it. I had heard next to nothing about it. The premise is simple. A Time Capsule gets put together in the late 50′s by a middle school and a very odd little adds her unusual notes to it. Years later, the time capsule is opened and a young boy recieves the notes the strange little girl wrote. His father stumbles upon a hidden meaning in the notes and realises that these notes predict when the world will end.

The great thing about this film is the tension they set up as Cage’s character races to discover the history of the girl who wrote the apocalyptic note. As he delves deeper in to the mystery, not only does his son become involved but soon he finds they are being stalked by a group of strangers who appear to have something to do with the end of the world.

I was ready to really dig this film. I really like Nicolas Cage despite the stinkers that he is involved in, he also had some other really great turns. “Knowing” had this really creepy vibe to it with all the strangers and something mystical seeming to be happening. I had thought that these mysterious strangers may have been some diabolical doomsday cult or something along those lines. “Knowing” was an incredibly cool movie.

Then the last half hour happened.

I don’t know if they just rolled the dice to choose and ending or not but let me tell you it was one of the dumbest fucking pieces of shit I have ever witnessed in my entire life. I am only so angry because the movie started out so promising. I will give credit where credit is due, but I will also spoil the crap out of this film because it deserves not to be seen if at all possible. At least they didn’t chicken out and save the world. Everybody dies and the world ends. However, to enter into the realm of dumbassery so completely, the son and another little girl become the new Adam and Eve of an alien race.

Yup.

I have a sneaking suspicion that one day we will see a Blu Ray releases where the creators say “Haha! We were just kidding! here’s the real ending!” and they finish what they started and give us the ending to what could have been an awesome film. If the film itself was entirely crud from start to end, it would probably have rated higher with me, but as it stands?
